Washing Machine

Washing Machine (Rotary)

Who invented the Washing Machine? There are many names associated with the invention of the Washing Machine and the development of different ways to tackle the cleaning of laundry. In 1782 the first washing machine using a rotating drum was patented by Henry Sidgier. The American inventor called Stephen Rust invented the wash board in 1833, which remained popular for many years. Canadian inventor John E. Turnbull patented the first wringer washer in 1843 and in 1851 American inventor James King created a hand-powered washing machine that included a paddle. Hamilton E. Smith went on to invent the Rotary Washing Machine in 1858. American inventor Alva J. Fisher is most often cited as the inventor of the Electric Washing Machine. In the 1930's John W. Chamberlain invented the first automatic washing machine and in 1947 the first top-loading automatic washer was introduced by the  Nineteen Hundred Corporation.

Definition of the Rotary Washing Machine: The mechanical Rotary Washing Machine  is defined as consisting of a perforated cylinder inside a wooden shell that had a hand-turned crank that rotated, on an axis. Rotation forced the water through the clothing inside the cylinder as someone turned the hand crank to rotate the cylinder.

Definition of the Electric Washing Machine: The Electric Washing Machine is an important home appliance defined as a mechanical apparatus, powered by electricity, for washing clothing and linen. The agitator is powered by an electric motor using a rubber belt.

Fact 1: Who invented the Washing Machine? The laborious task of washing clothes probably dates back to when mankind first started wearing clothes. After a period of time any types of clothes would become dirty and smelly and the problem of body lice, that live in the folds and seams of clothing would become a real issue.

Fact 2: Who invented the Washing Machine? Body lice became common in close, overcrowded conditions. They fed on human blood and laid their eggs and deposit waste matter on the clothing. The only way to avoid them in these circumstances was to wash the clothes.

Fact 3: Before the Washing Machine? Prior to the invention of the Washing Machine, the most common way to clean clothes was to wash them in rivers or along stream banks and lake shores, often pounding the items on stones or rocks.

Fact 4: Who invented the Washing Machine? Soap was invented c. 2200 BC by the Babylonians who lived in Ancient Mesopotamia and the use of fats boiled with ashes was a traditional soap-making method for over 2000 years until commercial soap-making methods were introduced in the 1800's. Hot water was known to clean clothes better than cold water but the only way to do this was to wash laundry in large wooden kettles of boiling water - making the task even more arduous.

Fact 5: Who invented the Washing Machine? The Ancient Egyptians hand scrubbed their linen with natron and the Ancient Romans employed "fullers" to wash and clean their clothes. The Roman "fullers" collected urine from the public, heated it with water and used the mixture to soak clothes which were then rinsed and wrung out.

Fact 6: Who invented the Washing Machine? During the early Middle Ages in Europe ashes and urine were used to make lye and sour milk was added to get clothes really white. The Medieval era through to the 1600's then saw the introduction of laundry bats used to beat the clothes clean.

Fact 7: Who invented the Washing Machine? The washing-dolly was invented during the 1600's as a wooden device to help with the laundry. The dolly, or peggy stick, had a long handle with a crossways handle at the top and six legs radiating out of the base. Clothes were placed in a wash tub and the dolly was strenuously pounded in a swirling and twisting motion.

Fact 8: Who invented the Washing Machine? The late 1700s saw the beginning of the Industrial Revolution and in 1767 the German inventor Jacob Christian Schaffer published a design for a 'washing machine' which looked a lot like a dolly in a lidded wash tub. Jacob Christian Schaffer's device differed because it had a hand operated crank.

Fact 9: Who invented the Washing Machine? Henry Sidgier: The first washing machine using a rotating drum was patented by Henry Sidgier in 1782. His invention consisted of a drum cage with wooden rods through which water passed through as the cylinder turned.

Fact 10: Who invented the Washing Machine? Other inventors, notably Nathaniel Briggs, James King and Edward Beetham patented variations of a hand cranked washing machine but the new fangled machines did not take off - they were too expensive and too cumbersome.

Fact 10: Who invented the Washing Machine? Stephen Rust: Instead of a mechanical device an American inventor called Stephen Rust of Manlius, New York had a much simpler idea that he patented on February 9, 1833. It was for a "Wash Board" with a piece of "fluted tin, sheet iron, copper or zink". The wash board was a wooden board with a corrugated zinc surface against which clothes were rubbed clean and for years this was the preferred method to use when washing clothes.

Fact 11: Who invented the Washing Machine? John E. Turnbull: In 1843 Canadian inventor John E. Turnbull of Saint John, New Brunswick patented the first wringer Washing Machine that he called it the "Clothes Washer with Wringer Rolls".

Fact 12: Who invented the Washing Machine? James King: American inventor James King created a hand-powered washing machine that he patented in 1851, similar to the Henry Sidgier design, but this device had a paddle.

Fact 13: Who invented the Washing Machine? Hamilton E. Smith: Another American inventor, Hamilton E. Smith (1811 - 1886), invented the Rotary Washing Machine in 1858 which included a reverse revolution.

Fact 14: Who invented the Washing Machine? Electricity become available as a source of power in a few homes during the late 19th century and inventors began to look for ways of developing an electric washing machine.

Fact 15: Who invented the Washing Machine? Alva J. Fisher: On May 27, 1909 the American Engineer and Inventor Alva J. Fisher (1862 - 1947) filed for a patent for "Drive mechanism for washing-machines", the original assignee was the Hurley Machine Company. His US patent number US966677 was granted on August 9, 1910.

Fact 16: Who invented the Washing Machine? Alva J. Fisher: Alva J. Fisher went on to receive  patent number US 1136221 on April 20, 1915 for a "Clothes Wringer" followed by patent number US1211123 for an "Agitator or dollies for washing-machines" on January 2, 1917. Alva J. Fisher then received US patent number 1505881 on August 19, 1924 for a "Washing Machine". Not surprisingly Alva John Fisher is the inventor most closely associated with the invention of the Electric Washing Machine.

Fact 17: Who invented the Washing Machine? The Electric Washing Machine invented by Alva J. Fisher used electric motors in a drum based system and was called the Thor. The Thor washer two-roll wringer was manufactured and sold commercially by the Hurley Machine Company of Chicago, Illinois.

Fact 18: Who invented the Washing Machine? The Thor Washing Machine was well marketed with sales pitches such as "Let Electricity Launder your Clothes" and "Thor makes Washdays a pleasure".

Fact 19: Who invented the Washing Machine? John W. Chamberlain: During the mid 1930's John W. Chamberlain from Bendix Aviation introduced the first Washing Machine that could wash, rinse, and dry clothes in just one cycle. John W. Chamberlain invented the first automatic washing machine.

Fact 20: Who invented the Washing Machine? In 1947 the first top-loading automatic washing machines were introduced by General Electric and the now Whirlpool Corporation.

Fact 21: Who invented the Washing Machine? New developments continue to the modern day aimed at saving water and conserving energy. New digital and electronic technology, such as the microchip, has provided greater efficiency and removed the need for dials and knobs to be replaced with LED displays and buttons for operation and automatic timers. There is a vast choice of top loading and front loading washers and combination washer/dryers that all strive to become environmentally friendly.
