Black Inventors - Lewis Latimer (1848 - 1928): The African American inventor and engineer Lewis Howard Latimer, one of the great black inventors, invented the carbon filament in 1881 that improved the newly-invented Incandescent Light bulb.

Black Inventors - Jack Johnson (1878 - 1946): The African American inventor (and world champion boxer) Jack Johnson invented the Wrench which he patented on April 18, 1922.

Black Inventors - Garrett ​Morgan (1877 - 1963): The African American inventor, businessman and entrepreneur Garrett Morgan, one of the great black inventors,  invented the modern  Gas Mask in 1914 and the Traffic Stop in 1923

Black Inventors - Elijah McCoy (1844 - 1929): The African American inventor and mechanical engineer Elijah McCoy​ invented the steam engine lubricator, a high-quality industrial invention, which led to the expression "The real McCoy" meaning the meaning "the real thing" or "the genuine article".

Black Inventors - George Franklin Grant​ (1846 – 1910): George Franklin Grant, the first African-American professor at Harvard, invented and patented the first wooden Golf tee in 1899.

Black Inventors - Madam C. J. ​Walker​ (1867 - 1919): The African American inventor and entrepreneur Madam C. J. ​Walker​ (born Sarah Breedlove) invented a range of hair care products including a hair-straightening formula in 1905.

Black Inventors - George ​Washington Carver​ (c. 1864 - 1943): The African American inventor and scientist George Washington Carver was not credited with specific inventions but discovered numerous new uses for peanuts, soya beans and sweet potatoes helping to diversify agriculture in the United States. George ​Washington Carver​ was one of the great black inventors.

Black Inventors - Lonnie ​Johnson​ (1949 - Present): The African American inventor, designer, engineer and businessman Lonnie Johnson invented the Super Soaker in 1982.

Black Inventors - Jan Ernst ​Matzeliger​ (1852 - 1889): The Dutch Guyanan inventor Jan Ernst ​Matzeliger​ worked in the shoe industry and invented the 'Lasting Machine' an automated shoemaking machine that quickly attached the top of the shoe to the sole (a process called "lasting".

Black Inventors - Otis Boykin (1920 - 1982): The African American inventor and scientist Otis Boykin​ invented a control unit for the artificial heart pacemaker. The pacemaker device uses electrical impulses to maintain a regular heartbeat.

Black Inventors - Frederick ​McKinley Jones​ (1893 - 1961): The prolific African American inventor and entrepreneur Frederick ​McKinley Jones​ invented an automatic refrigeration system for long haul trucks and railroad cars.

Black Inventors - Norbert ​Rillieux (1806 - 1894): The African American inventor and engineer Norbert Rillieux, one of the great black inventors,  invented the vacuum sugar evaporator in 1864 that revolutionized sugar processing.

Black Inventors - Thomas L. ​Jennings​ (1791 - 1856): The African American inventor Thomas L. ​Jennings​ invented a dry-cleaning process called 'Dry Scouring',  in 1821. Thomas L. Jennings was the first African-American to be granted a patent March 3, 1821.

Black Inventors - Sarah E. ​Goode​ (1855 - 1905): The African American inventor and businesswoman Sarah E. ​Goode​ invented the Folding Cabinet Bed in 1885. Sarah Goode started life as a slave and became the first African-American woman to be granted a patent. ​
